Story, and Collaborative Education in Games. This is The Indie Story Week # 0. An ongoing blog chronicling the development of Pawcho Saves the ABCs, a mobile game being developed by an independent Vancouver team that aims to teach young children how to write the alphabet. Last week we talked about mechanics, the building blocks of a game, and introduced our art style. Video Game Design and Production is, as a whole, an extremely collaborative effort. Even small indie games require a varied skill set to create a unified vision for a game. Maintaining that cohesion through a lengthy and complicated design process is one of the hardest things to pull off as a group of developers. While we may be big fans of Pawcho as a team, we also understand we don’t have brand recognition for easy sales. We wanted to explore an option that would appeal to child and parent alike. We wanted Pawcho to be both a story and coloring book in one, and at no point did we want the narrative to feel forced or unnecessary. Each level of Pawcho involves a child interacting with several letters, tracing and filling them in to complete a task for our brave police dog to help him along his journey to rescue the ABC’s. During each of the levels we wanted short stories to further flesh out his adventure, but the problem was where to place them. What we didn’t want to do was interrupt gameplay, especially for kids who couldn’t read the stories. Ultimately we chose to go with narrative separation, and placed them at the end of the levels to prevent this problem for arising. We pictured Pawcho as a game that could be played as a collaborative effort between parent and child. While the child can play the levels, filling in the letters and solving the puzzles, afterwards the parent can read the unlocked short stories so they can both experience more of Pawcho’s adventures. Visual styling and interactive stories are great, but nothing really beats just reading a silly little story to your kid, especially one that they are invested in. Check back next Tuesday where we’ll take a look at how our levels break down, the puzzles kids will face in the game and how we use letters as a narrative device. De La Salle News Blog.
